Health & Physical Education

This course is designed to help students take charge and achieve a state of total well-being or total health through teaching them healthy habits that will last a lifetime!  Students will learn that health refers to more than just physical fitness; it is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being.  This course is designed to incorporate Arizona’s Common Core Standards (English, Language Arts, and Mathematics) into the Health and Physical Education curriculum through a variety of Reading and Writing assignments, Health related Vocabulary, Goal Setting, Journaling/Tracking (Dietary Intake and Physical Activity), and Calculations (BMI – Body Mass Index, Heart Rate, …).  Attendance, Class Participation, Journaling/Tracking, and Assignments (in and out of class) will determine the students’ grades each semester.  

Goal Setting and Journaling/Tracking will be based on the following five Physical Fitness Elements and Dietary Intake:

  1. Cardiovascular Endurance
  2. Muscular Endurance
  3. Muscle Strength
  4. Flexibility
  5. Body Composition

Dietary Intake

Students will be provided with an Academic Planner for Journaling/Tracking the above areas.

The above areas will be developed through the following:

  • Team (Soccer, Hockey, Basketball...) & Individual Sports
  • Lifetime Sports
  • Group/Individual Fitness Activities
  • Fitness Circuits 
  • Intervals
  • Games/Activities

Tools and Goals for Health

USDA MyPlate: Students will be able to name the five Food Groups, classify foods by group, and make smart choices: Vegetables, Fruits, Grains, Dairy, and Protein

  • Determine the proper Calorie Intake based on Age and Activity Level (Energy Balance)
  • Determine proper Portion Sizes by Calorie Level

Tools and Goals for Physical Education

  • Physical Activity Pyramid for Kids: Students will be able state the recommended Physical Activity Guidelines for the following areas:
    • Aerobic
    • Muscle-Strengthening
    • Bone-Strengthening
